Many in-house counsel aspire to widen their horizons by working abroad; others find that, as their organizations expand, they are required to, regardless. This session will unpack some of the baggage of that foreign posting:

• What happens to your professional status, and the application of legal privilege, as you operate under different legal systems?
• To the extent privilege may no longer apply to you, what strategies can you adopt to gain protection for communications?
• What employment law matters, both Canadian and foreign, should you consider and address with your employer in advance?
• What about your (and if relevant, your family’s) income tax treatment, visa status, health coverage and so forth?

The position may be nearby across the US-Canada border, or distant across the international dateline – but being an ”expat” always raises issues that may come as a surprise. Our panelists will help demystify the journey.
